What is the area like?
The glacier resort of Tignes is situated in the Savoie Alps and is widely recognised as one of Europe's finest ski destinations. It is only a mere fifteen-minute drive away from Val D'Isère, which is often considered two resorts in one when it comes to your skiing day.
In relocating the village due to the construction of the dam in 1941, Tignes le Lac was born, with many buildings erected in the late 1970s in response to an increasing flow of tourists.
Compared to its neighbour Val D’Isère, Tignes boasts a more varied set of slopes and is set at a higher altitude by 200 metres. It is set between two peaks; La Grande Motte (3656m) and La Grande Casse (3852m), both of which are glaciers.
Due to its accessibility to La Grande Motte, it allows skiing for 10 months of the year. This attracts many national ski teams who wish to train during the summer months, ensuring that the towns are lively most of the year.
