Great value property in the French Alps wowing buyers in 2013

Posted on 15 March 2013

This season’s fantastic snow conditions might be part of the reason, but the appeal of a long-term lifestyle investment combined with comparatively stable prices and cheap mortgages are the key reasons more British people are looking to buy French ski property.

Proof of this comes from a report by the UK’s leading overseas property portal that shows that homes for sale in the Chamonix area of the French Alps attracted one of the highest rises in interest from buyers last month. In Rightmove Overseas’s February report, Chamonix recorded the sixth highest percentage increase in searches on the portal out of any destination in the world. It was the highest scoring ski destination, with only one other skiing hot spot making the top 10 table, namely the Pyrénées-Orientales, also in France but in the south-east of the country. The same report also revealed that the French resort of Morzine is currently very popular with people researching ski homes for sale.

“The result doesn’t surprise me, given the relative security a carefully chosen ski home offers,” commented Julian Walker at Skiingproperty.com. “Ski properties have limited supply, a captive, regular rental market and are fun to own, all of which help prices to remain relatively buoyant compared to other types of second home destination. Chamonix and its surrounding area, of course, is a world-class winter sports destination, with excellent links from the UK, via plane from Geneva, high-speed train via St Gervais-les-Bains, or it’s easy enough to drive.”

Property in the Chamonix area currently available from Skiingproperty.com include leaseback apartments in Vallorcine and a little further out, freehold apartments in Samoëns.
