History of Meribel

Following the war, Colonel Peter Lindsay left the army to focus on skiing development in the area and started establishing his first ski lift. In 1938 he built the first lift with 31 chairs to a top height of 1900m – one of the highest runs in Europe at that time. Afterwards, the first chalet, Le Baron, was constructed. By the 1950s, there were about 4 ski lifts, 17 hotels and 40 chalets.
