Meribel, Information & Area Guide

Méribel is a picturesque ski resort in the Tarentaise Valley in the French Alps. It is located near the town of Moutiers. This utterly charming village is nestled in the Alpine Valley of Les Allues. This chocolate box village has some of the most stunning mountain views and is a haven for snow lovers. Although this ski resort is one of the largest in the world, it still retains its traditional village and unspoilt charm even though the resort has grown over the years.

Méribel is a fantastic ski resort and is suitable for all levels and abilities of skiers. The age range of visitors is across the board, there is something for everyone. The good news is that snow in the resort is virtually guaranteed throughout the season due to its high altitude. The range of altitude is from 1500m to 1600m. Méribel refers to the neighbouring villages in the Les Allues commune of the Savoie department of France, close to the town of Moutiers. They are called Méribel Centre, Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel village. The villages are within the Vanoise National Park and are part of the Les Trois Valleés which is an interlinked ski system.

You won’t find it difficult to get to your ski resort as it’s easily accessible from most International airports. The nearest airport to Méribel is Chambery which is about 1 hour and 15 minutes away. Transfers to your holiday home are made easy by using shuttle, taxi or hire car. Grenoble (2 hours) Lyon (2 hours) and Geneva (3 hours) airports can also be used.

So what can this lovely ski resort offer you once you have arrived? Let’s start with the slopes. Beginners will find plenty of gentle slopes through the pine trees as there are no less than 183 easy runs. This is ideal especially for children and there is also a wonderful ski and snow boarding school. First timers can have valuable ski lessons so even the youngest members of the family can have fun. If you’re a more experienced skier then lessons are on hand to improve your skill and technique. Intermediate skiers will benefit from the huge number of long red runs. There’s plenty of off-piste skiing for advanced skiers, or they can try their hand at glacier skiing. The resort also has an excellent snowboard park.

There are numerous additional activities which include ice skating, snowshoeing, hang gliding, speed riding, parapenting, which involves running off the side of a mountain with nothing but a winged parachute and a pair of skis to save you. It sounds a tad scary but it’s exhilarating and anyone wanting that rush will love it. What about a helicopter sight seeing tour? Take in those snow-capped mountains for the best views possible. It’s also possible to book dog sledging, ski touring and a horse sleigh tour. I bet the little ones of your group would love to meet the beautiful huskies up close and personal. Have you ever thought about night skiing under the stars? It’s great fun and the whole family can take part. This Alpine resort is popular year-round, especially with families. It’s a miss conception that ski resorts are only during the winter months. The summers in France and particularly at these lovely resorts are fantastic. There are mountain biking, road cycling, horse riding and hiking trails to take in the scenic views. There are fishing and clay pigeon shooting or even paintball. Who doesn’t love tenpin bowling? Let’s not forget about the golf courses and even crazy golf which are extremely popular. There are numerous activities too many to list.

Méribel is the largest of the villages in the valley and has great shopping where you can shop until you drop. Relax at a cafe and treat yourself to a steaming hot chocolate and a delicious cream cake. A visit to the Spa with an indoor pool will revitalise you and give you some time out to pamper yourself, relax and unwind in the wellness centre.
