La Clusaz is a major ski resort located in the French Alps however, that doesn’t mean it’s lost its traditional village charm. It has a reputation for being a picturesque village set amongst a lively ski area with a pretty square in the centre of the town which is home to a 200-year-old Savoyard church and is well worth a visit.
La Clusaz is perfectly positioned in the Rhône-Alpes region it has been host to winter sports since 1907 and as well as being an established ski resort it has much to offer apart from skiing. There are 132km of ski runs which are ideally well suited to beginners and intermediates, advanced skiers can challenge themselves with black and red runs which are not for the faint hearted I may add and the resort is also fast becoming one of the big names on the free riding scene. La Clusaz is 32km (20 miles) to the East of Annecy which is in the Aravis Valley it is part of the Aravis skiing area which it shares with the neighbouring resort of Le Grand Bornand to offer a total of 220 km (140 miles) of pistes. There are many different lakes close by to this ski resort, the most famous and beautiful is the Lac des Confines.
The area of La Clusaz is 40.62 km2 (15.68 sq miles) with a population of around 2000 full-time residents and the altitude range is from 984 – 2500m with its ideal powdery snow covering 84 pistes, with 5 terrain parks and 70km of cross country. It is suitably located close to Geneva International Airport which is only 1 hour away and villages nearby include Thônes, Manigod, Saint-Jean-de-Sixt, Le Grand Bornand and the magnificent and ever popular Chamonix.
The winter season is the most popular for tourists where skiing is the main event. La Clusaz is also well known for hosting the French paragliding competitions during the summer and in 2010 the Tour de France passed through the main part of the town.
An outdoor market sells local produce every Monday in La Place de l’Eglise busy streets fan out from the square, each lined with tasteful shops, luxury boutiques, bars and hotels. There is an array of other activities to keep you busy how about an early morning horse ride before the start of the days skiing or, at the end of the day at sunset, taking in the breathtaking views.
