Châtel, Information & Area Guide

Châtel, 1200m

Châtel is a delightful village located in the Haute-Savoie area in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region in south eastern France. It’s in the scenic Northern French Alps in an enviable position on the French/Swiss border; an extremely beautiful area most popular for its excellent skiing. Chatel has managed to retain its traditional alpine way of life considering it is a major ski resort. Although a large resort it has something for everyone; its ski runs are suitable for all levels of skiers and borders alike. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced on the slopes, all levels are catered for. The entire village has the reliable service of a free ski bus which means easy access to all the ski lifts of which there are 45. Those who love wide open snow fields will be in their element here, with Châtel’s 130km of groomed pistes including an incredible 1000m of vertical descent. Ideal for beginner skiers and snowboarders (there is a terrain park and a boarder cross track) but there is also a lot to offer for intermediates and experts alike, with easy links to Avoriaz and the Swiss resorts of Torgon and Morgins. There are also 49km of cross-country ski trails. The altitude here is 1200 and it now benefits from a recent investment into improving its infrastructure, such as the introduction of the new chairlift to the Linga ski area, which opened in early 2015, enabling skiers to reach this area more easily, than was previously possible.

Châtel is located between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, just an hour and a quarter away from Geneva airport and 45 minutes from Thonon-Les-Bains. International flights are available from just about anywhere. Transfers are quick and efficient via shuttle bus, private car and taxis; the nearest train station is at Monthey.

This fabulous resort has been given the Famille plus Montagne accreditation simply because it’s a wonderful resort for family skiing holidays.

Although famous as a winter destination, Châtel is also popular with keen mountain bikers and the ski lifts open between June and September to accommodate them. There are numerous other summer activities you can enjoy including windsurfing, sailing (on Lake Geneva), white water rafting, and paragliding, kayaking and walking. If you’re really brave, you can also try the Fantasticable (only open during the summer), a zip line where you really can experience how it feels to fly!  Safely hooked up in a harness, you fly along at up to 60mph up to 240m above the hamlet of Plaine-Dranse, so it’s not for the faint hearted!

During August, Châtel celebrates both the Fête de la St Laurent and the Fête de la Belle Dimanche. St Laurent is the patron saint of Châtel and during the Fete; carnival is rife, with floats and lots of live entertainment. La Belle Dimanche is the farmers’ tribute to “beautiful Sunday” and is held up in the Plaine Dranse accessible by the ski lift Pierre Longue.

The picturesque village and popular ski resort have many amenities on offer for all to enjoy. There are local bars, restaurants and a great selection of shops selling everything you may need. The resort can also offer modern facilities such as a wellness centre for relaxation, where you can spend some time in the Jacuzzi, swimming pool, gym and sauna. If your body aches from a long day skiing down the pistes, a massage will relax you ready for the same again tomorrow. Relaxation is a must after a fun filled day on the snowy slopes and, in such a traditional resort, these facilities have been carefully integrated to blend in and work in harmony with the tranquil surroundings, which can be in contrast to many of the larger and older purpose built ski resorts. Châtel can offer a vibrant base in a top notch setting to live and holiday both in the summer and winter time, and is great for couples, groups and families alike with all it has to offer. You can’t go wrong in this scenic village, it ticks all the boxes.

Après ski is varied here there are authentic styled French bars and traditional English pubs too. There is live music to make for a great night out.
