Praz Sur Arly, France
Praz-Sur-Arly is a pretty little skiing resort in a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in South Eastern France. This small skiing resort is ideal for families, beginners and intermediates to skiing. Praz-Sur-Arly is within striking distance of the more prominent skiing areas of the Mount Blanc region which has 35 km of pistes and at least 26 trails. There is 146 km of Nordic cross-country trails and every week there is a 1-hour introduction lesson for adults. It’s a wonderful alternative to the larger resorts of Megève and Chamonix. The terrain and small village atmosphere is perfect for families and people new to the slopes and the area is 22.64 km2 (8.74 sq miles) with a population of just over 1,300 inhabitants it never gets too busy. An idyllic setting nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc situated between Beaufortain and Aravis mountain ranges it has retained its traditional village charm
It’s around 1 hour 15 minutes from both Chambery and Geneva airports and 2 hours from Lyon. Therefore the closest airport is Geneva at 57 km away and then Chambery at 58 km Transfers to Praz-Sur-Arly are made very easy by shuttle or taxi. The short transfer makes it a great destination for a holiday it won’t take long to reach Praz-Sur-Arly. It’s an ideal transfer time as it’s not too long for the younger members of the family.
This immensely popular family resort is a little cracker as there are plenty of activities to keep you busy from sledging, dog sledging, hot air balloon rides, and paragliding, horse carriage rides, and snowshoeing, mountain and High Mountain guided tours, yooner rides which are a cross between skibob and sledge. Climbing spots are also available in Praz-Sur-Arly, found at the foot of Mont Blanc. Children are well catered for here, there is Opoualand which is a playful education area specially dedicated for children. The slope is jam packed full of activities from slalom, skill games with lots of opportunities to having fun whilst exploring the mysteries of the mountain. In June 2011 Praz-Sur-Arly was awarded the coveted label of “Famille Plus” it’s an absolutely perfect ski holiday destination for families.
During high summer you can cool off on the banks of the River Arly as the Arly Beach is a perfect spot to relax and take a dip in the refreshing water. If you fancy a trip out there is another lake in Flumet which is only 4km away or you can also visit the lake at Passy which is 20km away here you can try your hand at windsurfing and canoeing. In Combloux 9km away there is a biotope artificial lake with a fitness centre and there is an indoor and outdoor swimming pool in Megève with an aqua play area the children will love.
How about a game of mini golf? At the 18 hole Belles leisure Park? You can also view some original works of art here too. For the younger members of the family visit the House of Fairy Tales which is a magical museum with animated characters that come to life whilst the stories are told of Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella the little ones will be enchanted and I think the grown ups will like it too!
There are village markets and local shopping where you can buy all your daily provisions. Megève is close by only 4km away where there is a larger selection of shops and local farms are nearby too. Everything you could possibly want can be found here from bakeries and sports shops for any equipment you may need to souvenir shops for holiday mementoes and gifts and much more. If you’re eating at home then visit the local markets to stock up on your favourites, lots of socialising is at home so children are included in this lovely family orientated resort and for your peace of mind, a Doctors surgery is also in the village.
Après ski is varied with plenty of restaurants, tea rooms, and bars; traditional local foods and international cuisine is available. Everyone is catered for from delicious cheeses local to the area to fresh crusty bread and mouth-watering stews.
Nightlife is low key with this being mainly a family resort but it will also appeal to couples and groups of friends, who are happy with a laid back nightlife. This is a true gem of a ski resort beautiful panoramas and excellent facilities make this a great holiday destination.
