Switzerland, Information & Area Guide

Switzerland was once thought of as a rich man’s country, however, that perception is rapidly changing it’s a breathtakingly beautiful country with one of the highest standards of living in the world. Skiing is a popular pastime here and as the sport grows so do the stunning resorts each offering something different and each outstanding.

Flims, Laax and Falera ski resorts constitute one of Switzerland’s very large and well-connected winter sports regions and it is only 1.5 hours from Zurich and 2.5 hours from Milan. Laax is a municipality in the Surselva Region in the Swiss canton of Graubünden its elevation is 1016m, this region has 220 kilometres of pistes, stretching across 100 square kilometres of snow-assured slopes. It also boasts over 235 kilometres of mountain bike trails and over 250 kilometres of hiking trails, which lead to countless panoramic lookouts offering views across the Graubünden Mountains. Snowboarders tend to gather at Laax with its impressive 4 terrain parks and if by chance it does rain the indoor facilities are second to none.

You can enjoy world-class groomed ski trails in Graubünden’s largest interconnected ski area of Flims Laax. No matter if you’re a beginner, intermediate, expert, free rider, free style or prefer ski touring, snow lovers are sure to get their adrenalin rush especially on the valley route leading straight to the doorstep of Waldhaus Flims.

Of course, there are the more famous ski resorts which Switzerland is renowned for and these resorts have been established for a number of years.

Zermatt, in southern Switzerland’s Valais canton, is a mountain resort renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking. The town, at an elevation of around 1,600m, lies below the iconic, pyramid-shaped Matterhorn peak, and there are 360km of pistes groomed for each ski level range.

St. Moritz is a luxury alpine resort town in Switzerland’s Engadin Valley at an elevation of around 1.822m. It has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, has the Cresta Run, a world-championship bobsled run made of natural ice, and an outdoor Olympic ice rink. It’s frozen lake hosts polo, cricket and even horse racing on ice. Ski and snowboard areas include Corviglia, Diavolezza and Corvatsch, and there are well-groomed cross-country ski trails with over 350km of skiable pistes available.

Klosters-Serneus is an Alpine resort village in the Swiss canton of Graubünden its elevation is around 1,179m it’s been popular with celebrities since the 1950s, its ski areas include the Madrisa, also home to the Madrisa Land adventure park. Further slopes are, Davos is connected to Klosters-Serneus by the Gotschnabahn cable car and here you will find 307km of pistes suitable for every level especially intermediate.

Verbier is part of the four valleys skiing area, joining Thyon, Veysonnaz, and Nendaz for a total of more than 410 km of ski runs. It’s well laid out runs for long-distance skiing with an abundance of backcountry terrain that make it one of the world’s best resorts for off-piste skiing. The Tortin is famed as one of Europe’s steepest descents, set on a natural terrace, with views of the Grand Combin and the Mont Blanc range. Verbier’s snow park hosts the annual Verbier Ride freestyle event and the Verbier Xtreme freeride competitions.

Gstaad is famous for the number of celebrities that visit this popular resort; this is definitely the place to come to if you want to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. However, Gstaad is a wonderful ski resort with plenty of fine skiing and snow boarding, it’s made up of 10 villages that combined are known as Gstaad Mountain Rides. The total area of the combined villages adds up to a total of 220km of pistes and snow parks with 57 lifts, its altitude of ski terrain peaks to 3000m. Its glacier is an added bonus meaning skiing is guaranteed from October through to May and night skiing here is a delight. Ideal for beginners and intermediates and the advanced will be challenged on the runs, not for the faint hearted.

Fly into Zurich airport for:

Flims, Laax and Falera – around 153km from the airport and the transfer times are 1 hour 30 minutes.

St Moritz – is around 211km away and the transfer time is 2 hours 39 minutes.

Klosters – is 151km from the airport and the transfer time is 1 hour 53 minutes.

Fly into Geneva airport for:

Gstaad – which is 158km from the airport and the transfer time is 2 hours.

Verbier – it is 164km away and the transfer time is 1 hour 49 minutes.

Zermatt – is 233km from the airport and the transfer time is 2 hours 34 minutes.

It’s not only skiing that will tempt you to visit this wonderful country; there are plenty of other activities available during the winter and summer months.

In winter you can try your hand at curling, skating at the ice rink, cross country skiing as the Flims Laax region offers 62km (38 miles) of cross country trails suitable for all levels of skiers, snowshoeing and winter hikes where you can marvel at the lush mountain landscape.

Summers in these resorts offers tennis, badminton as well as themed walking trails, and guided walks, mountain meadows and bathing and moorland lakes and mountain biking. Why not take a rafting adventure through the breathtaking Rhine Gorge also know as Switzerland’s Grand Canyon. A must see is a walk to the famous turquoise Caumasee or idyllic Crestasee and lose your self in the tranquil surroundings of this stunning area. If you are a keen golfer then fear not there is an 18 – hole course or you can choose to visit the ultra modern 27 – hole course nearby.

All this makes for a varied and fascinating holiday for the whole family as everyone is catered for with superb Après Ski which is varied and offers something for all tastes.
