Megève

If you’re looking for the whole package in one ski resort, then you have found it in Megève. This vibrant resort has always been very popular as it’s known as one of the prettiest and most upmarket ski resorts in France. It’s a commune in the Haute-Savoie-departments in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region situated in South-Eastern France. Its population is just over 4,000 residents, and this stunning popular ski resort is well known due to its proximity to Mont-Blanc offering majestic views in the French Alps. The resort became a regular favourite of the rich and famous when the Rothschild family began to take their winter holidays there. Today it’s as popular as ever and known as one of the most desirable ski resorts in Europe. It’s most definitely one to visit and once seen it’s never to be forgotten.

Megève Alpine skiing resort area is known as the “Domain Evasion Montblanc” This area comprises of Megève, Mont d’ Arbois, L’Alpette, Rochebrune and Côte 2000 with Saint-Gervais-Les-Bains, Combloux, La Giettaz, Les Contamines-Montjoie and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce. The “Evasion Mont-blanc” range covers around 445 km of the ski slopes. On an area of 8 km², there are 116 lifts providing access to 217 slopes totalling 445 km. In addition, this area boasts 18 cross-country-skiing trails that total 95 km (59 miles)

The closest airport is Geneva International Airport which is 90 km (56 miles) away from the centre of Megève. The transfer time is just over 1 hour. Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in Lyon is also another popular choice just 119 km (74 miles) away. Transfers are easy with regular shuttle transfers or private taxis to reach your holiday destination and it’s ideal if you’re travelling with younger members of the family as the transfer journey is short.

Megève is a member of the “Best of the Alps” ski resorts. It’s a traditional Savoyard town and a very picturesque medieval village, with its charming narrow cobbled streets and as you would expect exclusive designer boutiques. Lots of jewellery, gift and antique shops make this village a joy to explore; the car-free centre is an added bonus so it doesn’t distract you from taking in the panoramic views. It’s also a popular summer destination and is especially known for its golfing, The “Snow Golf Cup” is a unique golf tournament that takes place in the snow at Megève Mont d’ Arbois plateau. Another highlight is The Megève Polo Masters which is an international polo tournament played in the snow.

Megève is a prime example of where non-skiers like to visit as there is so much to do besides skiing; there is a very modern sports centre which has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gym and even indoor and outdoor ice rinks. Why not try your hand at Curling? There are tennis courts and a climbing wall, if you fancy being a spectator why not take in a local ice hockey game or watch a curling match. After a hard day at the gym pamper yourself at the Turkish bath and enjoy a relaxing massage, get ready for the evening’s entertainment.

Hitch a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh or indulge in a hot air balloon trip, with 50km of marked footpaths simply enjoy the picturesque views and take an afternoon stroll. Such is the beauty of this resort; it’s appeared in several films, therefore, it’s easy to appreciate why skiers and lovers of the great outdoors visit time and time again.

Après ski is bursting with entertainment and fun in Megève it is everything you would expect it to be and more. There is something for all tastes, restaurants, cafes, bars, a cinema, jazz bars and trendy nightclubs and discos and there is even a casino. Local rustic French dishes are available as well as international cuisine there are more than forty restaurants so it’s safe to say there are plenty of choices. Why not try the Michelin starred restaurants for a treat; as this is the place to mingle with the rich and famous. Eating in? Visit the weekly market where local produce can be found including fresh bread, a tasty selection of meat and fresh fish caught locally, super fresh fruit and vegetables, tarts, cakes, honey, and jams. You will find all of the essentials are there including supermarkets and bakeries, patisseries and chocolatiers it’s safe to say you won’t go hungry!
