Bruson Swiss Ski Resort
This lesser-known town centre, in Bagnes Valley, across the valley from Verbier, is reached via a cable car (Le Châble-Bruson) that links to Verbier and the broader Four Valleys network. Le Châble village nearby offers good transport links to the rest of Switzerland, Verbier, and other ski areas.
More challenging slopes offer several runs for intermediate to advanced skiers, from 1,000 to over 2,200 meters, as well as fantastic tree skiing. Unlike Verbier, quieter Bruson has retained traditional Swiss charm with chalets and farmhouses. Hotels are more affordable, ranging from chalets and guesthouses to spartan accommodations.
Bruson is also great for snowshoeing and hiking in winter, offering trails with stunning views. The natural landscape is less developed than larger ski areas and popular for ski touring, with routes into more remote mountain parts, offering incredible backcountry skiing.
La Tzoumaz, for An Amazing season
La Tzoumaz is on the northern side of the canton of Valais. It’s in the same valley as Verbier but on the opposite side. Well-connected to Verbier via a high-speed gondola, it is an excellent base to explore La Tzoumaz and the larger Verbier ski area. From major Swiss cities like Geneva and Lausanne, the nearest central town, Riddes, is easily reached by road or train.
For skiing, La Tzoumaz offers mixed terrain suited to average skiers. Local slopes are generally quieter than Verbier, with plenty of wide pistes for learning.
The north-facing slopes hold snow longer and offer excellent skiing conditions even late into the season. The alpine village has plenty of easy blue and red runs. A dedicated children’s area and snow park are also for younger skiers and beginners.
One famous attraction, the 10-kilometre toboggan run, descends from the top of Savoleyres down to the village. After the slopes, visitors also relax in nearby thermal baths, like Thermes Parc in Val d’Illiez. The town also offers a small ice skating rink and an indoor swimming pool for varied activities.
A ski pass in La Tzoumaz grants access to the entire Four Valleys network, which includes over 400 kilometres of ski runs. From La Tzoumaz, you can easily explore Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, and Bruson.
Nendaz and Veysonnaz resort for Families
Verbier, Nendaz, and Veysonnaz are further northeast and are accessible from the Sion Path. Since they link to the 4 Valleys, both villages offer more affordable properties than Verbier. Nendaz has greater access to the rest of the ski area, while Veysonnaz gives you access to the Thyon, La Printse ski area’s quieter slopes. Nendaz is also known as an affordable base.
This area is perfect for freeriding, with guaranteed snowfall and skiing up to 3,330m. Nendaz is also linked to the more famous Verbier but with more relaxed vibes and is excellent for families. It is 8km down the mountain from Siviez and Thyon. The modern centre features a mix of chalets, apartments, and small hotels. It’s just a short distance from Haute-Nendaz, a charming hamlet with old buildings and a lovely baroque chapel.
For freestyle skiers, Plan-du-Fou / Prarion is an excellent choice. It’s a massive bowl where you can start on one side and follow the sun all day. Nendaz-Veysonnaz also has plenty of north-facing slopes, helping the snow to stay cold and soft longer.
Freeride routes here are famous. The stunning views overlooking the Rhône Valley are a fantastic reward for those seeking out this lesser-known part of the region. Otherwise, at Greppon Blanc, there are two diamond black runs for good levels of skiers.
Thyon
Thyon connects to Veysonnaz, Nendaz, and Verbier resorts via ski lifts and runs and sits at 2,095 meters, ensuring good snow coverage. The closest town, Sion, 20 kilometres away is the gateway to Thyon. Sion also connects to Geneva and Zurich from the train station, and provides easy access to Thyon by car or bus.
Thyon is particularly well-suited for beginner and intermediate skiers. At the same time, black runs and off-piste areas near Mont Fort and Mont Gelé offer plenty of excitement for more experienced skiers. Thyon also has a strong reputation among snowboarders thanks to its excellent snow park, Central Park, and the dedicated children’s areas, such as the Snow Garden, is where young skiers can practice their skills on gentle slopes.
The Etherolla chairlift provides access to the entire Four Valleys, allowing skiers to explore Veysonnaz, Nendaz, and Verbier without needing a car or public transport. From Thyon, skiing to Verbier and back in a day is possible, offering a diverse skiing experience across the entire region.
In the summer, Thyon transforms into a hiking and mountain biking paradise. The area offers numerous trails with stunning views of the Rhône Valley and the surrounding peaks. Thyon is a popular spot for paragliding, with several launch sites providing exquisite aerial views of the Alps.
